How To Measure A Kitchen For Remodeling: Easy Steps & Tips

Whether you’re designing a new kitchen or sprucing up your old one, the first step to a successful kitchen renovation is measuring the space accurately. In fact, the best-laid plans always begin with proper measurements. In that regard, here is how to measure a kitchen for remodeling!

What You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to measure your kitchen successfully:

  • Tape measure

  • Ruler

  • Graph paper

  • Pencil

How To Measure A Kitchen For Remodeling

Now that you have the necessary equipment, follow these easy steps to measure your kitchen:

Measure the Walls

  1. Start from one corner of the kitchen and measure horizontally until you reach an obstruction (e.g., a door or window).

  2. If you reach an obstruction, start a new measurement from the other end of the obstruction.

  3. Continue until you reach the opposite corner of the room.

  4. Separately note down a corner-to-corner measurement (to get dimensions of the entire wall).

Measure The Ceiling

  1. Measure the height of the room (the distance between the floor and ceiling).

  2. Repeat this in different spots around the kitchen in case the floor/ceiling isn’t leveled.

Measure The Windows & Doors

  1. Measure these by starting and ending at the outside edges of the trims.

  2. Measure the distance between the bottom of the windowsill and the floor.

  3. Note down the direction the door(s) swing open in.

Put All The Information Together

Get your graph paper, pencil, and ruler and jot down the measurements in a drawing.

  1. Draw the perimeter of the room and denote the (total) length of each wall.

  2. Draw a box where the window(s) are, and draw lines to denote the length from the corners to the windows’ edges. Also, write down the length of each window.

  3. Leave an empty space for doors and jot down the measurements as you did for the windows.

  4. Repeat the process for any other obstructions, for example, the range, dishwasher, and refrigerator

  5. Write the height of the room in the center.

Tips For Measuring A Kitchen For Remodeling

Additionally, here are a handful of tips to remember while measuring your kitchen:

  • Put aside kitchen essentials before measuring. These include the microwave, grill utensils, pepper pots, and dishes.

  • Work in one direction, preferably clockwise.

  • Include trims in window and door measurements.

  • Measure and jot down the length(s) of any visible pipes.
